High speed ISP
vs dial up
When I first got into high school I convinced
my dad that we need to get connected to the internet, and
I was instantly enthralled with the net. Since they were
on dial up ISP and we only had one telephone line most of
my online time was at night time, so I'd remain up for
hours emailing bubbies and chatting with my friends. I
discovered online chess and cards, chat rooms, and message
boards. I was amazed at how much data was out there. I
could plug whatever I wanted to learn about into a search
engine and up would pop some facts about my subject.
When I got to college I was introduced to the world of high
speed internet service, and I was surprised to learn how much I
had been missing out on by relying on dial up ISP. Instantly I
could download programs without leaving the computer online all
evening to download a game demo, and I could stream music and
videos straight to my computer.
When I was on dial up ISP I had known persons shared music
online but the knowledge didn't do me any good since it took
such an unrealistic amount of time to download a single tune,
much less an complete CD. High speed ISP let me swap music as
well as movies and documents back and forth with my friends
throughout campus whenever I wanted and within minutes; no more
getting up at 4 o'clock in the morning to make certain my song
download was still working.
Another nice thing about high speed access had over dial up
ISP was that with my high speed connection, I could be
online all the time, letting me answer to emails and
chat with friends whenever I wanted without waiting 3,
4 or 5 minutes for my computer to get connected to
the internet and for my email home page to load.
Though dial up ISP allowed me to access all of the
essential, basic components of the internet it didn't make it
really easy. I still recall bringing over a publication so I
could have something to study while the web pages downloaded on
our dial up connection. Though the dial up ISP was a lot better
than nothing, I don't believe I could ever go back now that
I've tried high speed ISP since it gives me so many more
options and uses for the internet that I could never take
advantage of while on dial up.
